Excerpt From A Coaching Letter – By David B. Wolf
A Question on Sacrifice:
Certainly “sacrifice” has an onerous connotation. Still, I think that, essentially, I consider “sacrifice” in the same sense as “giving”, without much distinction. So, if I’m out of balance, then my giving isn’t truly giving, because it will drain energy somewhere
along the line. Related to your martyrdom statement, I see it similar with giving- we can take, with the appearance of giving- a form of unhealthy martyrdom, or sacrifice that conceals self-absorption. As you write, we can’t avoid sacrifice, and thus our opportunity is to increasingly consciously determine where and how we direct this energy of sacrifice, and also how we receive and respond to giving, or sacrifice, that is directed towards us.
